Camping  @  Lake  Monroe

As I sit here to commence this camping  information relative to Lake Monroe, my initial thoughts immediately go back in time to 1938, where, at the tender age of six, my parents took my brother and I on our first camping trip to Cullen Lakes in Northern Minnesota. What better way for a child to love and appreciate nature than camping under the stars in a tent, fishing out of an old wooden rowboat, then being able to savor the smell and taste of deep- fried Bluegill, freshly halved morel mushrooms slowly simmered in butter and accompanied by a huge platter of sliced potatoes fried in a big black iron skillet in bacon grease - all of this along with fresh fried biscuits. That experience is just as vivid today as it was sixty two years ago; and what is most remarkable - you  and/or your family can really enjoy these same adventures at  Lake Monroe. There are three principle camping areas within the confines of Lake Monroe: Paynetown State Recreation Area, Hardin Ridge Camp Ground and Allens Creek Camping Area Paynetown and Allens Creek are operated and under control of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. Hardin Ridge is operated under the auspices of the U.S. Forest Service
